This image is in chapter 3 pg. 48 panel 1 of American born Chinese. In this image I see chin-kee just entered Danny’s house after his long plane ride to America. I see him where Chinese outfit, he has buck teeth, always has his eye closed, and his luggage is Chinese takeout. In the text I see him sayin “harro amellica” showing that he can’t speak English well. In this picture it shows all the different stereotypes about Chinese people from the buck teeth to the way they speak, and it helps teach us the different stereotypes Chinese people have. It shows the stereotypes of people and even tho they are different than us we should still be kind to them.

I really liked this book even tho it had the one thing I hate the most being stereotypes. I liked how they showed each character and had stereotypes for each one of them including danny, it taught me the same thing I already learned that we should be kind to each other no matter what. It shows the cultures and literature of other people. One like I didn’t like was how short it was. If I could change anything about the book it would be the length of the book. Over all I really liked this book and I wish there was second one.
- One the funniest panels in American born Chinese is pg. 48 panel one. In the panel it shows chin-kee walking in and it shows many stereotypes about Chinese people. It has chin-kee talking in the accents that people think Chinese people speak. I also shows his luggage being Chinese food. And that is a funny moment in American born chinses.
- A moment in American born Chinese that portrays stereotypes is in pg. 14-15.The guard wouldn’t let monkey king in to party because he was a monkey. The guard was trying to be as kind as possible to tell monkey he can’t join the party because he had no shoes, but monkey demanded he be let in and the guard told him no because you’re a monkey. And that was a moment in American born Chinese it portrayed stereotypes.
- A moment in American born Chinese it shows man vs man is pg. 205-212. It shows Danny fighting chin-kee because he was sick of how chin-kee embarrassed him. So they ended up fighting. Danny was wining at first until chin-kee fought back. Danny then uppercut him revealing it’s not chin-kee. And that was a moment in American born Chinese where it showed man vs man.
Section two
- Gene yang did a really good job showing prejudice because there prejudice in every chapter. Some are really hard to find and others are really easy to find. Like pg. 31 panel 2 Timmy said “my momma says Chinese people eat dog” that prejudice quotes is probably the easiest one to find. In pg. 137 panel 2 one of the villager said “are you too stupid to get a real job” the villager doesn’t think being a monk is a real job and this quote is kind of hard to find. Gene yang did a really good job making prejudice remarks in the book. And that is how Gene yang was successful in showing prejudice.
- Gene Yang represented the struggle with culture identity in many areas, but honestly I think he did it the best with the monkey king. In the beginning the monkey king was proud of who he was. Until the guard was very rude to him at party on pg. 15 panel 2. At that point the monkey tried to be the great sage equal of heaven on pg. 60 panel 1. After the monkey was trapped under a mountain for five hundred years he decided that I should be proud of who I am on pg. 158 – 160. And that is how Gene Yang represented the struggle with culture identity in American born Chinese.
Section three
- Well I am white and not many people have stereotypes about white people, but I have been stereotyped about the things I like when I’m at school. At school I play dungeons and dragons a roleplaying game that involves medieval times, and people would call me a geek which doesn’t offend me but it gets annoying. Another thing is that I have a black girlfriend and many people who are racist would call me a n****r lover, and that bothers me because we should all be kind to each other no one is better than the other race. Another thing I have been called is fat, and yes I know I’m big boned but I’m working on losing it. At this school I have been called so many things that it’s gone numb of what these people say about me. I don’t care what people call me, but if you call my friend something were going to have problems. And that is how this book is similar to my school.
Section 4
- I believe that monkey king dealt with the most stereotypes because of how they affected his life. At the beginning the monkey king was happy of who he was and what he was becoming. Then he went to heaven for a party and all the people there were mean to him because he was a monkey on pg. 15 panels 2-5. Then he left to head home to change what he was on pg. panel 3. He then became the great sage equal to heaven because he didn’t want to be a monkey on pg. 60 panel 1. Then he was trapped under a mountain for five hundred years. A monk came a monkey became his disciple on pg. 158 panel 3. On that day monkey decided to be the monkey king again knowing that what he’s proud to be.
- Out of all the chapters in American born Chinese chapter one had the best example of stereotypes. In chapter one it showed how the other people thought about the monkey king. In the chapter the monkey king was happy about himself and was proud to be himself. He had friends and family, and they all cared for each other. The monkey king went to heaven and the gods didn’t see him as a king or a deity. They saw him as a monkey and only that. They treated him like one and would not let him in to the party.
- At the beginning of the book I saw stereotypes as petty words that can be ignored. Although now I see some stereotypes can hurt people really badly. Some stereotypes are harder to ignore that other one. Like in chapter 5 pg. 96 panel 2 the bullies called jin a chink. Calling an Asian person that is about the same as calling African American the n word. Its rude and unacceptable, and no one should ever be called in anything racist.
